Robert Knapp (November 20, 1936 — April 6, 2019)
Robert Knapp known to his friends and family as Bob passed away at his home on April 6, 2019. He was 82 years old. He is survived by his wife Carlin of 55 years, three daughters Valerie, Diana and Ellen, three sons-in-laws Mark, Mitch and Frank, five grandchildren Lauren, Jared, Cole, Ryan and Andrew and a brother, Donald.
Bob was born in New York City on November 20, 1936 to Thomas and Catherine Knapp. He attended Bayside High School and graduated. He joined the Air Force in 1955 and served his country for 23 years rising to the rank of Master Sergeant. Bob served one tour in Vietnam and was a recipient of the Bronze Star as well as the Purple Heart for his courage and bravery. He also worked as a Security Officer at Sandia National Labs for 20 years.
Bob was a life member of VFW Post 401 where he held numerous positions as Chaplain, Vice Commander and Commander. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Commemorative Air Force. Bob loved to volunteer at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial where he gave tours and greeted visitors every second Thursday of the month. He was an artist, modeler and avid reader. Bob enjoyed traveling with his wife Carlin, they visited all 50 states and numerous countries.
A rosary and funeral mass are scheduled for April 23, 2019 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Albuquerque, NM. The rosary will be held at 9:30 am and followed by Mass at 10:00 am. The family is requesting a donation to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital be made in Bob’s honor in lieu of flowers.
